Norwegian term

senkomplikasjon/følgesykdom

Norwegian to English Medical Medical (general)
I need to distinguish these two if possible, so a single translation is not what I need here. Context is diabetes, and my source has for instance:

"Sukker i større mengder skader åreveggene, og fordi personer med diabetes type 1 og 2 har forhøyet blodsukker, har de økt risiko for en rekke følgesykdommer eller senkomplikasjoner."

Other examples where both appear are at http://www.diabetes.no/Senkomplikasjoner.b7C_wljSZR.ips and http://tinyurl.com/4cmy7qs.

Discussion

Christopher Schröder Feb 23, 2011:
As two distinct things?
Charles Ek (asker) Feb 22, 2011:
The source uses both several times.
Christopher Schröder Feb 22, 2011:
If they both mean the same thing, why do you need two translations?!

long-term complications/sequelae

According to the Kunnskapsforlaget medical dictionary senkomplikasjon/følgesykdom both mean sequelae, so I think you could use that on its own as the two words mean the same thing, but I have provided two different terms as you requested.

Sorry that should have been singular. long-term complication/sequela
Note from asker:
Thanks! I hit the same dead end initially but you have provided what is probably going to be the solution.

agree Vedis Bjørndal : But I don't think they mean exactly the same thing. "Følgesykdom" sykelig tilstand som resultat av forutgående sykdom. Norsk ill.ordbok. I would say that a "følgesykdom" may be a late complication, while a "senkomplikasjon" may not be a "følgesykdom".

that should be side effects or future complications
Peer comment(s):

disagree Christopher Schröder : only drugs have side effects, not diseases!

I beg to differ in this case as diabetes has side effects associated with lack of/excess of sugar/insulin
