Thanks, Jenni for your wise words. I have a great deal of respect for you and Liz, too, and if my response seemed a bit grumpy that's because it's not nice to feel you've been accused of poaching someone's answer.

Interesting point about 'EU English'. A pure UK English version of this word would be 'petrolisation' but I went with '-ization' given the global oil context.

Peace colleagues! There is a fine distinction between keeping the original in quotes and giving an anglicised version of the word (which is what the asker chose). I do appreciate the "kudos" of colleagues I respect-and you are both truly excellent translators in my book-more than mere points. The fact is that there are often various ways of saying something, in which case the protagonism goes to the asker and his or her client. I find it a relief that there are various ways of saying something. It is also interesting to know where and in what contexts those differences are showing up, as it helps us localise translations a little better, especially when a client asks for 'EU English', but not necessarily British English. Thanks to everyone who chimed in on this question, because it's going to be a familiar word going forward.

@ Liz I don't really see your point. Leaving 'petrolización' in quotes, which was Jenni's alternative option, is not at all the same thing as 'petrolization' which I researched and made a case for. Jenni's explanation begins: "There's no way to convert this." - though it is rather confusing and I'm not clear whether that's her view or part of her reference. Either way, I don't see that I've stolen anyone's answer or points.

It's a kind of made-up word in Spanish political/academic discourse and in English too. I would keep the inverted commas to show this.

Slightly more Google hits for the English word than the Spanish, but they clearly mean the same thing and are used in the same way:

There's no way to convert this. Some people are leaving it in quotations marks (as it is understandable) or using the phrase " there is talk about/people are referring to "a petroleum-based economy and democracy" - If it's not specific, you can make economy and democracy plural to make the terms generic. 12 Apr 2009 ...
