In response to Sebastian's comment, just two examples from the UK:

http://www.kent.ac.uk/careers/americanstudies.htm
"At Kent, American Studies can be studied with a focus on one of the three following main subject areas: Art & Film, History or Literature. The destination statistics below are derived from all of these combinations."

http://www.pml.ac.uk/pdf/Career Paths_v2.pdf
"I went to Cardiff University and studied medical molecular biology (basically a biochemistry degree with a focus on human disease) for the next 3 years (1997-2000)."
Peer comment(s):

agree Sebastian Witte : I also like Kim's derived version and do recollect having come across it in contexts where it could only mean what we're looking for. This term is OK though.

agree Kim Metzger : The closest equivalent in US and Canadian universities would be "concentration." http://ecampus.oregonstate.edu/online-degrees/graduate/educa...

Of course, why didn't I think of that? Have read it more than once in US curricula.

Thank you, Maja_K.
agree Michael Martin, MA : That sounds about right.

Thank you, Michael.
agree Lancashireman : From a UK perspective: 'Area of specialisation' works well; 'focus' sounds less appropriate in an academic context (OK in business, though); and 'concentration' just sounds wrong.
