afrontado
Portuguese to English
Art/Literary
History
Museum
'um grifo afrontado enquadra um motivo central de folhas'; 'A representação dos grifos afrontados aparece em estatuária militar'; 'os grifos aparecem afrontados a um pequeno colunelo'
I'm looking for the proper term for this. I think it's when something appears in relief in relation to the rest of the painting. At the front of everything else.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Note from asker:
Obrigada rir! Acho que é isto! Pensava que "affronted" queria dizer outra coisa, mas afinal também se usa neste caso. |

: Yes, although it is also simply called 'facing' or 'face-to-face', except in specifically heraldic texts, in which 'affronted' would be correct.

: While 'affronted' is correct, most readers would think it was a mistake, so 'facing' might be safer.

Thanks Verginia, but in this case I don't think it's that. I think this 'afrontado' is related to the Griffin's position in the painting. |

Then I noticed that in many paintings Griffins appear in relief in relation to everything else in the painting. That would make sense.
It's the only explanation I can find to some of the sentences...
"Fronted"
Masculine singular participle of the verb "address".
Meaning of "faced"
fronted , da
adj. . s and Heraldic . [ Figure or part ] in position reciprocal and placed face to face with another :
look at the Lions faced the shield .
