Spanish term

cerramos bandas

Spanish to English Other Agriculture Olive farming
SPAIN. This expression appears in verbatim interviews with olive farmers. I'm not sure what it means, and the client won't be available to respond to any queries until tomorrow. The sample sentences below may be from two different speakers, I'm not sure, but one appears to recommend less irrigation while the other recommends more.

"Cerramos bandas, menor riego. Enraizante, utilizamos aminoacidos para recuperar masa radicular."
"Cerramos bandas, y regamos más. Humedad en el pasillo. "

@Tomasso Thanks for that information and the link. The client has now gone AWOL. He was supposed to send me more of the same on Friday, then postponed it until Monday, and today (Tuesday) I'm still waiting. Typical... :)
Tomasso Dec 3, 2019:
Tocante a " one recommends less irrigation?"
Not the tomatoe hot house, but the olive trees, getting the ***roots to go deep*** is a goal. To get the roots to grow they apply vitamin stimulants, amino acids, and cut irrigation, trouble with shallow roots is trees can blow over in the wind, here in peach orchards you may irrigate by regar (flood irrigation i beleive) or plastic bands, tube, drip irrigation, from time to time DEEP penetrating irrigation along with vitamin b6 based Root Grow is used to encourage deeper roots, both to resist drought and also for deeper root systems. https://www.kenogard.es/product/enraigard

close the ranges

"Close the ranges, less irrigation."

Note from asker:

close off/block the ditches

I think "bandas" could refer to the irrigation ditches between the rows, and closing them off or opening them could be a way of controlling irrigation:

"Olives are, as a rule, planted on friable soils where irrigation water moves downward rather rapidly, and the feeding roots of the trees are inclined to be near the surface; hence the use of a number of irrigation ditches between the rows, through which the water may be passed and the entire surface soil wet within a short time"

If they are secano, they won't be using any artificial irrigation, just rain water, surely?

So a case of barking up the wrong olive tree.
Note from asker:
Rather than ditches, these are secano olives and I think the irrigation may be drip, with bands or thin piping. I'll ask the client tomorrow...
He sent a photo too. Turns out there are 2 types of farmer being interviewed, greenhouse tomato and olive, but their answers are all mixed up in the Excel file.

Reference:

My guess is that they are closing the plastic sheeting!

Note from asker:
Yes, although in the photo it looks more sturdy than just plastic sheeting. Cheers wendy :-)
