Spanish term

óxido cúprico de amonio

Spanish to English Science Chemistry; Chem Sci/Eng
Hi everyone, this is in an excipients validation protocol for a pharmaceutical from the mid-90s.

I'm familiar with cupric oxide/copper oxide, but I'm not sure how to incorporate the ammonium part into the name? My searches aren't coming up with anything. Thanks in advance!

Wikipedia doesn't give it a chemical name, though it may still have one:

Other names include:
TETRAAMMINE COPPER DIHYDROXIDE
Tetraammine copper(II) dihydroxide
copper ammonia dihydroxide
copper azane dihydroxide
cupric ammonia dihydroxide
Tetraammine-copper(2+)dihydroxide

Schweizer's reagent is the metal ammine complex with the formula [Cu(NH3)4(H2O)2](OH)2. This deep-blue compound is used in purifying cellulose.

It is prepared by precipitating copper(II) hydroxide from an aqueous solution of copper sulfate using sodium hydroxide or ammonia, then dissolving the precipitate in a solution of ammonia.

Glad it helped Kathryn - it's a tricky one, I've added more terms/synonyms to the glossary entry just to be more inclusive and cast a wider net for future reference.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Hi Neil, thanks so much, I went with "Tetraammine copper(II) dihydroxide" in the end. I needed a name, even if it wasn't very common. Thanks for your timely and helpful contribution! :)"

Cuprammonium hydroxide

I admit that it is the first time I see this compound written in such a way in Spanish, and therefore it is somehow difficult to match it with a term I have handled in the past regarding this salt.

However, there is a term which would somehow match the description given, and it's the one provided in this answer. Find attached an example of its use in a published scientific paper for the treatment of cellulose, and also a database page where the compound is described as such and matches the structure of the compound.

Hope this helps. Best of lucks with your translation.

Note from asker:
Hi Ninoslav, thanks for your answer, it just didn't work very well in the context I had, I needed a name for the style to be right. Saying "The residue is soluble in Schweizer's reagent (copper (II) oxide (is) dissolved in ammonia: dissolve 5 g of copper sulphate in 100 mL of boiling water and add sodium hydroxide until precipitation is complete." sounds too awkward for me. Your contribution is much appreciated regardless and will hopefully help someone in the future who has a different context!

agree Neil Ashby : I think this is probably the best option, the one I've given, althoug offical, is very rarely used. "copper (II) oxide dissolved in ammonia"
