Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): Juan Jacob

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Doctor of Philosophy and Letters (Philosophy)

Though it's not common, it certainly exists, and should be translated accordingly. In the context of academia---with so many differences among the numerous degrees around the world---a literal translation is perfectly fine here.

In my birth state of New Jersey, Drew University has offered a Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.) for years (see link below).

At the site above, there are several researchers there with this very degree. In short, a literal translation would appear to be more than advisable in this context. Indeed, if this had been the doctorate I earned, I'd want it translated this way myself. :-) To do otherwise, would be wrong. IMHO

I hope this helps!

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

así, solo.

Here are the top universities in Spain offering PhD programs include:

Autonomous University of Barcelona (65 PhD degree programs)
Pompeu Fabra University (9 PhD degree programs)
University of Barcelona (50 PhD degree programs)
Complutense University of Madrid (55 PhD degree programs)
University of Navarra (23 PhD degree programs)
Peer comment(s):

neutral Marcelo González : As for your list, Pat, it's not really a question of what's more common. (We know a 'standalone' PhD is.) It's a question of translating it to reflect the uniqueness of the degree, which we owe to its holder (and the client, of course).
