Knee
Hiya Lisa.
This is a piece that fastens the beams (on which the deck planking is laid) to the side timbers or frames. It's a solid bracket.
Is there an illustration?
Depending on where it is it may be a stem knee, which joins the keel to the stem

You might this of some use. There are a few diagrams and drawings. On page 58 is the piece you're asking about, here clearly shown as a standard knee

I'd just call it a knee. It's just a bracket of which there are several kinds and shapes

Certainly knees. No doubt

Note from asker:
Hi Peterm that's greathelp, thanks. I have an illustration but can't attach pics here, and it's included in a book that is it not yet published. The boat terms form a tiny part of the book, otherwise I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole :-)) |
In the illustration it is in the centre of the boat and looks like a rod/lever. Based on the descriptions you've provided, it looks more like a standard knee. |
