Spanish term

práctica hospitalaria

Spanish to English Medical Medical (general) University transcript

¡Gracias de antemano!

Domini Lucas Mar 24, 2022:
@Sara I don't know about the difference with 'práctica extramural', but I can say that, in the UK, student hospital placements take place during the course i.e. before graduation. I don't know anything about how it all works or what the equivalent is called in the US. I leave that to the others.
Lirka Mar 24, 2022:
Hi Sara, in light of the new info, I'd suggest using "in-house" vs. "external hospital" experience
Muriel Vasconcellos Mar 24, 2022:
@Barbara Indeed. I decided to post a separate answer exclusively in favor of 'practicum'. I found hundred of examples of "hospital practicum" from US university catalogs, including specifically specialization in microbiology. Also Canada, New Zealand, and Australia.
I also found some (not so many) for 'extramural practicum'.
Barbara Cochran, MFA Mar 24, 2022:
Students usually do their practicums right before they are awarded their degrees.
Sara Cantrell (asker) Mar 24, 2022:
"práctica extramural" too Thank you all for all of your comments so far! My doubt with using "hospital (work) experience" is that it doesn't seem like something you'd find in a transcript, no?
To complicate matters further, there is another course in the transcript called "práctica extramural". Would this change any of your answers? To be clear, these are, in fact, courses that the person has taken before they graduated.
Barbara Cochran, MFA Mar 23, 2022:
Practicum I agree with Sara and Muriel. Having had a long career as a life-long learner at several American colleges and universities, that's the way I've always seen and heard the term referred to, particularly in the case of nursing or social work courses.
Stuart and Aida Nelson Mar 23, 2022:
I sympathise with both of you Lirka and Muriel but put my thoughts in an answer.
Lirka Mar 23, 2022:
Muriel, I studied both biology and medicine in North America and never encountered "practicum". Almost everything is derived from Latin -- had 4 years of it, you?
Muriel Vasconcellos Mar 23, 2022:
@Lirka It's not from German; it's from Latin. This doesn't appear to be medical school. I don't agree that it's not used. I have seen it a lot in my experience. I worked and studied at Georgetown University (Washington, D.C.) for many years.
Lirka Mar 23, 2022:
I hate "practicum". It is taken from the German Praktikum and is not used in North America. internship is used, or simply "hospital work" as David suggested ("internship would apply to medical students, while this student apparently has a degree in microbiology, so "work experience" is generic enough).
Muriel Vasconcellos Mar 23, 2022:
@Sara I like 'practicum'. I see the term in medical school (and other university) program listings, at least in the US. It may not be UK usage, because I've never gotten support for the term when I've mentioned it on KudoZ.
Sara Cantrell (asker) Mar 23, 2022:
Ahora encuentro "hospital practicum" que me gusta más que "internship".

Hospital (laboratory) work placement / (practicum)

Asignatura = subject, course

Asignaturas in a university are compulsory, therefore, this is a compulsory time students have to spend in a hospital laboratory in this case.

Work experience or internships can be voluntary and not compulsory.

A placement is a period of work experience which is an integrated and assessed part of a student's degree, so they're different to an internship, which is extra-curricular. Placements require students to apply their learning from the course in the workplace and apply learning from the workplace in the course.

https://www.shu.ac.uk/student-placements/10-things-you-need-...

A practicum (also called work placement, especially in the UK) is an undergraduate or graduate-level course, often in a specialized field of study, that is designed to give students supervised practical application of a previously or concurrently studied field or theory

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Practicum

I agree with Lirka (see discussion) that this is a favourite in the German speaking world and it is probably borrowed from it. However, it would be the literal translation for 'práctica'. For what I've read 'practicum' is more used in psychology and other fields but I'm unsure if this is also used for microbiology = bacteriología.
Note from asker:
"Placement" does seem to be more of a UK term and this is for a US audience, another reason I'm leaning toward "practicum." Thank you for including both!

agree ezpz : hi stuart and aida :) - agree, in this case it is a specific unit rather than a general reference - can also be referred to as "sandwich year"

Thank you, ezpz, yes it is a 'sandwich year' but we couldn't call it as such in a university transcript :)
agree Domini Lucas : Adding a UK NHS link to the reference section. Hospital placements would be usual in the UK. I should have added I don't agree with practicum for UK. Can't comment re US. Sorry for later addition.

hospital work experience

Hospital work experience is a great way for a Medicine applicant to get that much-needed work experience every Medical School is after.

although "internship" is a viable alternative IMO

internship
/ˈɪntəːnʃɪp/
Learn to pronounce
noun
the position of a student or trainee who works in an organization, sometimes without pay, in order to gain work experience or satisfy requirements for a qualification.
"they encouraged students to apply for newspaper internships"
NORTH AMERICAN
Note from asker:
I think "hospital work experience" would apply in a broader sense, but this doesn't seem like the name of a course/requirement you'd find in a transcript. Also, I'm finding that "hospital experience" most often refers to the experience that a patient has while in a hospital.

Hospital experience / Hospital subinternship / Hospital clerkship

Note from asker:
I did find lots of examples of "subinternship" and "clerkship," especially on the Harvard Med site. I had never heard of either, so thanks!! :) I'm not sure if I feel comfortable using either term along with "extramural" though. (Like I said later in the discussion, "práctica extramural" I found also appears on the transcript.)
Peer comment(s):

neutral Stuart and Aida Nelson : Hospital clerkship is not suitable at all here! A clerk works in an office, this is a microbiologist working in a laboratory not in an office!!!
6 hrs
It's to fast to say that only because you see the word clerk, a clerk asists, in the words of Harvard "The clerkship ... allows students to evaluate and manage patients, bedside rounds, physical examination", so hands on experience I stand by my rendition

re hospital placements for medical students

I seem unable to enter the link in the web reference section so putting it here:
https://www.healthcareers.nhs.uk/explore-roles/doctors/medic...

These are usually as part of the course/training in the UK (I've worked in hospitals). You might need to check is equivalent in your context. As said above it's integral to the course, not just e.g. visiting to find out a bit how things work in a particular department.
