Spanish term
explotar huevos
Spanish to English
Art/Literary
Idioms / Maxims / Sayings
A text about a contemporary artist in Argentina who deals with feminist themes, I suspect this is some sort of pun involving the word "huevos" which is used locally, and colloquially, to refer to testicles:
Con una práctica de taller en la que acopla distintas materialidades, Sofía Quirno presenta una instalaciones inmersivas centradas en pinturas donde los elementos en el espacio hacen ecos unos de otros. Sus obras citan referencias a mujeres absorbidas dentro de paisajes lunares y realizan homenajes a artistas como Sarah Lucas y Francesca Woodman que en el arte contemporáneo hicieron explotar huevos a su alrededor.
It seems that both Lucas and Woodman worked with eggs, but a literal translation makes little sense to me
Thanks

: As far as I know, it's "shaken." I'm surprised none of the native English speakers mentioned anything about this.

to bust someone's balls
I think you're right to assume that "huevos" (the same as "pelotas") refer to "testicles", so I think the expression I'm suggesting would fit in well here. Using the word "eggs" or a literal translation would probably be not understood.
As an alternative, I'd suggest "to touch some people's sensitivities".
In any event, I think either one of these alternative would work here
and I hope you'll find these suggestions useful.

cracked some eggs around them (and bust/broke some balls while at it)
What if you combine the terms, given that the pun is lost in translation? Especially taking into account that, as O G V and Taña Dalglish said, the artist mentioned literally used eggs in their art.
"and pay homage to artists such as Sarah Lucas and Francesca Woodman who, in contemporary art, cracked some eggs around them (and bust/broke some balls while at it)."

broke the mold
Both these artists created art that was radically different. It may be challenging, but "busting balls" (which means being very tiresome and irritating) gives quite the wrong impression. I think "breaking the mold" is a better way of conveying something shatteringly innovative.
Definition of 'break the mold'
If you say that someone breaks the mold, you mean that they do completely different things from what has been done before or from what is usually done.

I agree with Liz. I think it is just "working with eggs" as a medium of expression.
Sarah Lucas was one of the young British artists who emerged in the nineties, using visual puns, humour and sensationalist tabloid images to interrogate traditional gender depictions. A series of twelve self portraits in the National Galleries collection shows her playing around with ideas of femininity and masculinity, using **fried eggs and a banana**, for example, to make confrontational or comical poses. https://www.nationalgalleries.org/art-and-artists/features/r...

Francesca Woodman Boy with Egg
https://competition.adesignaward.com/design-encyclopedia.php...
Francesca Woodman was an important figure in the world of art and culture, known for her influential photography. Her works were often self-portraits that often explored female identity, the body, and mortality. Some of her most famous works include 'Space2', 'Untitled, Providence', and **'Eggs 2'**. Her experimental and bold approach to her pieces made her a vital part of the art world, and her works are still admired and celebrated today.
