Spanish term

la Denominación de Origen Tequila 156

Spanish to English Other Food & Drink
Any Tequila experts out there?

This appears in a certificate of conformity for Tequila from Mexico for translation to British English.

I am happy with the whole text apart from I am not sure where to put "156". From the research I have done it appears that this refers to the Article in the Intellectual Property Law that describes the Designation/Appellation of Origin.

A further question if this is allowed. The Tequila Requlating Council uses both Appelation of Origin and Designation of Origin. I am not sure what the difference is but have gone with Appellation of Origin as this seems to be used more in the Tequila context. https://www.crt.org.mx/index.php/en/pages-2/proteccion-del-t...

Denomination of Origin Tequila 156

It's explained here:
http://www.ianchadwick.com/tequila/nom_dot.htm
Denomination of Origin Tequila (DOT) 156 refers to "tequila artesanal de Los Altos de Jalisco".
Note from asker:
That's a great reference. Thank you Phil.

neutral Muriel Vasconcellos : "Denomination" is not the legal term.

Denomination and designation are synonyms, as my reference shows.
neutral Elizabeth Joy Pitt de Morales : The correct term is "designation".

Tequila (Patron) 156 (Protected) Designation of Origin

https://en.wikipedia.org › wiki › Category:Products_w...
The main article for this category is **protected designation of origin**.
Protected designation of origin...
"These laws protects the names of wines, cheeses, hams, sausage, olives, beer, and even regional breads, fruits, and vegetables."

"Patrón 156" refers to the winery.

My credentials: I live 15 minutes from the Mexican border.
Note from asker:
Hi Muriel, thank you so much for this. All I found when I searched for 156 was the article of the law! Are you sure that designation of origin is better than appellation of origin? https://www.tequila.net/tequila-faqs/what-is-the-appellation-of-origin-for-tequila.html
Peer comment(s):

neutral philgoddard : I don't see where "Patrón" comes from. And surely tequila is made in a distillery.

You are right about the distillery. Then "Patrón" is the manufacturer.

designation of origin Tequila as defined in art. 156

Peer comment(s):

neutral philgoddard : I don't believe it's anything to do with article 156. It's a code for the region where this particular tequila is made.
