bosses openly refer to this invisible glass ceiling, if they do not want to give someone a pay rise or promotion. It is, unfortunately, mostly used as an argument in IP discussions and the like. It does sound strange and makes you feel stupid... as most people do not even know what it is.

"invisible" discrimination barrier
See the reference. The "glass ceiling" especially affects women and minorities. It's basically a kind of invisible barrier that prevents certain groups from rising too far through the ranks of a company. The barrier is not openly acknowledged, but it's there nonetheless.
