English term

quaquaquaqua

English Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting language
Here the word very confused me in the sentence like this:"Given the existence of a personal God," he says," with a white beard quaquaquaqua outside time without extension who from the heights of divine apathia loves us deeply quaquaquaqua with some exceptions."

What is the" quaquaquaqua"mean?

Thank you!

airmailrpl Dec 31, 2009:
I don't understand the glossary entry The asker's query was "What does quaquaquaqua mean?"

By the glossary entry we now are told that "quaquaquaqua" means "see down" or "see below."
Jim Tucker (X) Dec 31, 2009:
Constantinos means... ..."see below."
Annett Kottek (X) Dec 31, 2009:
Glossary entry Help! I don't understand the glossary entry: 'see down' for 'quaquaquaqua' does not make any sense!
Jim Tucker (X) Dec 26, 2009:
did not mean to imply that it was ...merely that quaquaqua is an indication of the hackneyed or somehow unsatisfactory nature of the statements that surround it.
Annett Kottek (X) Dec 26, 2009:
@ airmailrpl I absolutely agree, it's definitely not 'blah blah blah blah'. Some readers/members of the audience will nevertheless be reminded of someone saying 'blah blah blah blah' when they read/hear 'quaquaquaqua'. Of course I can only speculate if Beckett was aware of the association, or indeed if he knew the colloquialism. The OED's earliest entry for 'blah' is from 1918 ('bla bla bla' 1924, 'blah-blah' 1931, and 'bla-blahing' 1945); it's originally from the US, but George Orwell used it in his diary in 1942.

Today’s decoy, Waiting Thieves (quaquaquaqua), is re-written from words in Samuel Beckett’s play Waiting For Godot. Vocals are by Carol A. She’s a social worker by day, and brings a downswing to the lines, as though the words are empathised out. The collaboration was great fun. The next piece might also be from words from the same play.

from "qua" -- Beckett's mocking of academic discourse

"qua" originally = "as"; "in the capacity of" (Lat.). Beckett uses this several times in Waiting for Godot.

It's the academic equivalent of "blablabla"

Geertz sees this as an expression of Beckett's sense of the aporia, the dead-endedness, of such thinking. Unfortunately I can't recall the essay.
Peer comment(s):

agree Annett Kottek (X) : Lucky's speech is pretty unintelligible, but I guess 'blah blah blah blah' at this point tells us sth. of his feelings towards such a ‘personal God quaquaquaqua with white beard’. See also: http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/blah

neutral Annett Kottek (X) : I don’t think that this is supposed to be laughter. Beckett's stage directions are notoriously meticulous; any laughs are explicitly scripted as such. See http://www.samuel-beckett.net/Waiting_for_Godot_Part1.html
50 mins
it is definitely NOT blah blah blah blah
neutral Jim Tucker (X) : what is your source for quaquaqua as a representation of laughter? All I see in the sources you cite for "qua qua" are the screeching of frogs and the quacking of ducks. Just because it occurs on the same webpage as the word "laughter" is not evidence.

comic books.. cartoons.. sorry I do not feel the need to give "evidence" I have spent too much time on this subject. I am certain that "qua qua qua qua" is used to depict laughter/mockery. Unfortunately you cannot check with Becket because he is dead.
neutral Mirra_ : can you please yeld any reference about quaquaqua used for laughter?R:The most of them don't proof anything. Moreover 2nd explains there is no reasons to laugh;5th, 7th and 9th deal respectively with eagles, frogs and (Donald) Duck cries. :o)
