A tenant is a renter (one who makes regular payments in exchange for uses property in exchange for regular payments; one who allows someone to use property in return for regular payments) and in the case of a single-tenant property there is most probably only one flat/apartment and therefore only one person responsible for paying the rent.

With multi-tenant properties there are most probably multiple flats/apartments with more than one person responsible for paying the rent.

Single tenant can also apply to the business world. A building that hosts multiple companies would be a multi-tenant property, while a building that hosts a single company would be a single-tenant propety.

Thanks :)
agree Armorel Young : Agree with the last point in particular - in the UK a multi-tenanted property is likely to be an older house divided into a number of flats or bedsits.

agree juvera : Yes, but it can be a huge house, if it is rented by one rich tenant with 6 children, grandpa, elderly aunt, plus the au-pair and the housekeeper, it is still a single-tenanted property.

Absolutely correct. In short, only one person who pays the rent. Thanks :)

agree Edy Vigne : I should add that single-tenant refers to one household or family. Not necessarily one person pays the rent but rather one family

True, but from the legal point of view there is only one responsible party. Thanks.
