English term

intranet

English Tech/Engineering Computers: Systems, Networks
I know Internet should be written with capital letter, but I don't know about the 'intranet'.

It's part of an employees' manual:
"Communication on the internet/intranet should be ..."
Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): Angie Garbarino

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

"Internet" is, at least arguably, a proper noun. There is only one of it. No such consideration applies to intranets. Any company can set one up, and many have done so. I even had once of my own for a while. So "intranet" is a common noun, and no capitalisation is required.

That's not really an argument--it doesn't even make sense.//As far as I can see, Jack's only "argument" is that it sometimes appears capitalised in Google hits. That is no argument at all.
agree Brie Vernier : definitely not capitalized

Thanks.
agree Tony M : Definitely not capitalized, unless the company itself treats it as a proper noun, like the company I work for "WYZ Group Intranet" // Exactly, I agree entirely

Yes, but that's a bit different. I could set up a company called RBenham.com Coffee Pots, but that doesn't affect the way people use the term "coffee pot" in other contexts.

Thanks. Interesting link. Trying to insist on the capitalization of a word with "the" in front is swimming against the tide. Years ago, I would have written "the King of Thailand", now "the king of Thailand" seems more natural.

A network based on TCP/IP protocols (an internet) belonging to an organization, usually a corporation, accessible only by the organization's members, employees, or others with authorization. An intranet's Web sites look and act just like any other Web sites, but the firewall surrounding an intranet fends off unauthorized access.

Спасибо!
agree Richard Benham : I am not sure why anyone would want to spell "internet" with a capital "I", but there is no justification for doing so with "intranet".
