Quite often there is a magnet school for science, another one for foreign languages, one for business, one for the arts, etc. More often than not, in the U.S., they are located at pre-existing schools that are in lower-middle socioeconomic neighborhoods in order to improve the overall academic performance in such school. Usually they are run pararllelly with regular curricula.

They can be at any level: elementary, middle school and senior high.

agree jccantrell : More than that. They can draw students from a far larger area than normal schools. More like regional schools with a specialized curriculum.

school with teacher training programs

It's a school where they try out new curriculums, for example. Teachers would train there. There is a lower student/teacher ratio. They are ATTRACTIVE like a MAGNET.

In my home country they were called PILOT schools.

My kids attended one here in the U.S. last year.

Hope this helps.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Refugio : A pilot school is not the same as a magnet school. Teachers may train at any school that will agree to provide master teachers. Here is a helpful article: http://www.publicschoolreview.com/magnet-schools.php

Thank-you for your comment, Ruth. I was just telling Waleed what I was told BY THE MAGNET SCHOOL and comparing it to something I was already familiar with. I believe in his context he doesn't need too much detail.
