Babas

English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
Not long after, I promoted this woman from cleaning woman to my first assistant. She provided the support I needed when it did not come from anyone else. That alone became a lesson that I have tried to pass along. You do not need special gurus or Babas to grow. Teachers come in all forms and disguises. Children, the terminally ill, a cleaning woman. All the theories and science in the world could not help anyone as much as one human unafraid to open his heart to another.

Ashutosh Mitra Apr 10, 2012:
Here, word Babas has been used with Gurus, and I can assure you (being an Indian and Hindi speaking) that in this context it is just a synonym for teacher, in Hindi we use both words for teachers. And the word Baba (if used alone) is also used for Grand Father (paternal), for father at very few places.

Bau/Baba
Bau/Baba, whose name sounds onomatopoeic (bow-wow), was principal goddess of the Lagash area, with its three cities, Girsu, Lagash, and Nimen. As "Lady of Abundance," Bau/Baba controlled the fertility of animals and human beings (Leick 1998: 23)

Baba (nickname), meaning father in Pakistan, Indian(Marathi/Maharastra), Middle Eastern, and African cultures & grandmother in Ukrainian, Macedonian, Serbian and other Slavic languages
Baba (Alevism), an Alevi religious leader
(also a Polish grandmother and a wide variety of other meanings in various langauges , but I believe that "spiritual leader" is what the author means here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baba

agree katsy : It seems that all the proposals are right in themselves, but this seems the best in the context given IMO

Monks, travelling saints, Hindu preechers

These are the people (Mostly in India) who travel in cities & villages and part religious knowledge with common people and mostly survive on donations/begging. As they spread religious knowledge, they also some times, are considered as teachers.
