The Beatles - These British invaders led the charge in the war for the rock'n'roll throne.

I'm not sure of the meaning of "lead the charge", can someone rephrase it for me?

War/battle/invasion analogy used - Beatles in America?
Invading America - they came, they saw, they conquered
Lead the charge - flag bearer.. at the front of the throng, field when the 'charge' order given (think old war films)
War / battle of the bands to be the kings of rock and roll, take to the thrown, wear the crown!
