This is a message I received from an agency following a translation I sent. The translation was done in little boxes provided on the page. What do they want me to send? I haven't anything else (except an invoice). No CAT tools were requested for this project.

We are missing your TM however… Can you please send along?

With Maria all the way - If they pay reasonable rates don't upset them too much - merely point out that their box method gives them a head start to align the translation themselves.

I just saw your note (no PO). If they didn't specify it in advance in their e-mails, simply tell them that you didn't use a CAT tool because it wasn't requested. If they forgot to mention it, you can't be held responsible!

"I'm still sort of trying to use it" :))) Ha ha, that was so funny, Anna. Thanks for that. Ask them if they meant the trans. memory (it's clearly not obvious what they meant). If it wasn't specified in the PO, you don't have to send them anything.

Dave: This price war is deplorable. I'm sometimes at my wit's end! However this agency agreed on a rate by email, sent a NDA but don't use PO's. I'm used to PO's.

Thank you to both but... The translation was done alongside the original but in boxes provided. Now, I only used my brain and I can't send them that because I'm still sort of trying to use it. I thought TM was that but couldn't figure out how they wanted it since I thought it was clear I wasn't using CAT. Should I give them a piece of my mind instead? Wicked thought...

Such as Wordfast, TRADOS, or DejaVu database of the translation performed.
Don't worry, if they didn't specify one and if you did not agree to provide them with one as part of your contract, they are just trying it on. They (presumably) have a copy of the original, and now your translation. If they are half competent, they can align them in the TM of their own choice.

Beware of agencies that try this to increase their own productivity and profitability by forcing prices down even further.

Thanks, Ruth. I meant sneak in the sense that I couldn't see your respnse while I was busy venting my ire at less than reputable agencies trying to make sweat-shop workers of all us dilligent translators! ;-?> (or should that be we dilligent ...?)

translation memory

A translation memory, or TM, is a software program designed as an aid for human translators.

Translation memories are also known as translation memory managers (TMM).

Translation memories are typically used in conjunction with a word processing program, a terminology management system, a multilingual dictionary, and even raw machine translation output.

A translation memory consists of a database of text segments in a source language and their translations in one or more target languages. These segments can be individual words or multiword phrases.
