The exact phrase:"I have clients who wait for years for my spalted maple", says a woodworker. Didn't find "spalted" in dictionaries. Thanks in advance.

maple affected by a fungus

Spalted maple is maple wood that has been slightly infected with a fungus from being kept under moist conditions. Many woodworkers, including me, treasure spalted maple for the beautiful figure created by the fungal infection. Woodworkers can create their own spalted maple by storing the wood in moist conditions.

Spalted wood
Wood which is in the first stages of fungal decay, ie rot. Very often it is made manifest by irregular dark, or black, lines which run through the material. It is most common in beech but is found in many other hard woods. The fungae require damp conditions in which to grow; when the wood is dried (below about 20% MC) the fungae die and the process ceases.

spalted wood

Source 'Understanding wood' by Bruce Hoadley
The term spalted wood is commonly used to describe wood with zone-lined decay. Items of unusual beauty such as bowls or plaques can be made from spalted wood, as long as the wood is firm enough to be machined and finished.
