agree Fabio Descalzi : "Barren" is usually something similar to "desert" or "sterile" - but in this very context I think you are right with your explanation!

neutral Alfredo Tutino : "a waste rock dump" said to be "mineralised and barren" when speaking of mining area layout - to me it seems more likely to be related to ecological conditions than to mining prospects
