“I am the last man left in my family. I work the forge alone, my brothers and uncle are gone now.”
“What happened to your brothers and uncle?”
“We had lost so much in caravan raids my uncle and brother took up arms to help protect the last one. None returned. I could see the burning wreckage from the city walls. Another was lost to the temple sacrifices, another just plain disappeared.”
Would someone please clarify for me: what is the guy talking about? Is it about his brother? But what on earth could it mean that his brother was lost TO the temple sacrifices? They sacrificed him? But why "to" then?
Or is it about the last caravan, probably? Could it be that it was somehow meant for the temple, and now that it is lost, they can’t do their sacrifices?
I'll appreciate any suggestions!

sacrificed
He explains what has happened to the members of his family, all dead or gone.
One uncle and one brother fought in a caravan raid (fight / attack) and did not return; they are presumed to be dead.
Another brother, or family member was sacrificed (in a ceremonial sacrifice common in these times in Howard's story. That person is definitely dead. Why 'to' the sacrifices - it is the same as saying that someone was 'lost to the plaque', but in this case, it is to religious/ceremonial sacrifice.
Another brother, or family member simple disappeared, fate unknown, feared to be dead.

: Human sacrifices [on the basis of religious belief] were common in the ancient times. Abrahim's sacrificing his son in Bible, for example.
