English term

demineralised vs. deionised water

English Tech/Engineering Science (general) food chemistry
On a slightly pedantic note, does anyone have a clear definition of the differences between the two above terms?

In the case in point the plant I am wormking on uses Milli Q RO water, which some people refer to as deionised and others as demineralised.

The Millipore columns are fed from a double distilled storage tank, and the output leaves virually no dry residue on 0.02 micron filters.

Celiacp's answer looks good, but having found the following definitions, I thought I'd submit them for your consideration.

Definitions of "demineralized water" on the Web:
· Water that has had the minerals and ions removed. Considered necessary for high-end body-care products.
allnaturalbeauty.us/glossary_aromatic.htm
· In the current Food and Drug Regulations, bottled water whose mineral content has been reduced to a TDS level below 10 mg/L.

Definitions of deionized/demineralized water on the Web:
· Filtered water used in cosmetics. All water used in cosmetic formulations goes through this process to remove components that could interfere with a product’s stability and performance.

Definitions of deionized water on the Web:
· Water which has been specifically treated to remove minerals.
www.sbcfire.org/hazmat/env_terms.asp
· water free of inorganic chemicals. desalination the process of salt removal from sea or brackish water.

· water from which the majority of ions have been removed. Tap water has resistivity of <50 kiloohms, deionized water may have resistivity as >18 megaohms. The term deionized water has been largely replaced by ultrapure water to indicate that more than just low ions counts are required.

· Ions have been removed from the water so they will not interfere in chemical reactions.

· Water that has been treated to remove the dissolved ions. Commonly, filtration through a combination of anionic and cationic charged resins is used.

· water that has been filtered and treated to remove metallic ions, kill microorganisms, and remove impurities.

· Water containing no ions. (Usually produced through the use of ion exchange resins.)

· Deionized water (DI water) is a form of water which lacks ions, such as those from sodium, calcium, iron, and copper. This type of water is created using an ion exchange process. Deionized water is similar to distilled water, in that it is useful for scientific experiments.

Deionisation: Process utilizing special-manufactured ion exchange resins which remove ionised salts from water. Can theoretically remove 100 % of salts. Deionisation typically does not remove organics, virus or bacteria except through “accidental” trapping in the resin and specially made strong base anion resins which will remove gram-negative bacteria. [4]
Demineralisation: Any process used to remove minerals from water, however, commonly the term is restricted to ion exchange processes. [1]

some more details...

What is demineralised water?

Demineralised water is water completely free (or almost) of dissolved minerals as a result of one of the following processes:

distillation

deionization

membrane filtration (reverse osmosis or nanofiltration)

electrodyalisis

or other technologies.

The amount of dissolved solids in water that has followed one of these processes could be as low as 1 mg/l and is in any case always less than 10 mg/l. The electrical conductivity is generally less than 2 mS/m and may be even lower (< 0,1 mS/cm).

Deionized water
Deionized water (DI water or de-ionized water; Commonwealth English deionised water) is water that lacks ions, such as cations from sodium, calcium, iron, copper and anions such as chloride and bromide. This means it has been purified from all other ions but H+ or more correctly H3O+ and OH−, but it may still contain other non-ionic types of impurities such as organic compounds. This type of water is produced using an ion exchange process.

Deionized water is similar to distilled water, in that it is useful for scientific experiments.

Deionized water easily changes pH while storing it. This is because carbon dioxide from the air disolves in the water and causes a drop in pH by forming carbonic acid H2CO3. Boiling the water will remove the carbon dioxide to restore the pH.

Deionized water is sometimes referred to as Aqua on product labels.

Deionized water is commonly used to fill up the type of lead batteries used in automobiles.

Deionisation
Process that serves to remove all ionised substances from a solution. Most commonly is the exchange process where cations and anions are removed independently of each other.

Demineralisation
Processes to remove minerals from water, usually the term is restricted to ion exchange processes.

No minerals Vs No Ions

I feel you need a simple answer.

(If and)When a mineral dissolves in water, its molecules split to become ions. If the mineral does not dissolve in water, it stays as it is!

There are minerals which disslove in water and there are many others which do not. The process of dissloving leads to breaking-up the molecule to positive and negative sides; called Ions.

Hope this helps.

demineralized and deionized

Demineralized tells you the water has no mineral ions in it.

Deionized tells you the water has no ions in it?

Are hydrogen and oxygen present in water as ions?

To cut a long story short.
We used to distil water.
It was a tedious, and uncomfortable business.

Along came a smart-asred salesman with a doofer called a de-ioniser.

We bought them because the salesman promised wonderful things.

We called the water "de-ionized", rather sniffily,
a) because the doofer rarely completely de-ionized even when the it was new
b) we couldn't tell when it stopped de-ionizing, so we could end up with partially de-ionized water.

We have a disarming trait in that we call a vacuum cleaner a 'Hoover' since that was the best selling brand.
So we called the water "de-ionized" (as in 'so called de-ionized' water) because that was what the company called it.
I specified "de-ionized" or distilled according to my needs.

neutral PAS : // neither - pure water dissociates ("falls apart") into H+ and OH- ions on its own accord. Every drop of pure water contains some of these ions, even if it has been deionized (i.e. _other_ ions have been removed).

Since water is ions, which is the most accurate description of your water: - a) de-ionized b) de-mineralized?
agree Balasubramaniam L. : deionized water = water minus all ions except the constituent ions of water H30+ and OH-.

Since this discussion is slightly pedantic Balasubramaniam, what about the dissolved gases, are they ions please?
neutral Jörgen Slet : Re: "couldn't tell when it stopped de-ionizing" - the device I used measured the conductivity of the output. Can't comment on the rest of the matter.

They ironed out the faults over the years Jorgen, but by that time, the "de-ionized" was in the lexicon.
