English term (edited): rough stuff

depends

never heard it used in conjuction with persons, generally I would say that it means difficult or harsh conditions ("The Range Rover is a thoroughbred with a taste for the rough stuff"; "Time now to get sweaty and slam the bike into some rough stuff"...)
