enterprise

English Social Sciences Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc.
dear fellow translators, can you please explain the meaning of enterprise in the passage below?

The aesthetic involved... is strikingly similar, with a principled refusal to engage in the action expected in the particular circumstances. We might note something similar in Sontag’s arguments against interpretation, where we are enjoined to experience rather than to interpret works of art, and to abstain from criticism of them as much as possible. As we shall discuss in Chapter 6, Sontag’s arguments are problematic in many ways, but they do have some very provocative things to say about what we might call ‘idle’ criticism, as well as asking us to reconsider the very basis for the **enterprise** itself: a manifesto for critical silence perhaps.

what exactly is "enterprise" referring to here? is it the "enterprise of criticism", so to speak?

thanks

agree Ken Cox : 'the enterprise itself' is a stock expression and means 'the actual activity' in cases where the activity has a specific purpose or objective -- in this case, art criticism

agree Sasha2 : Yes, and it is the "enterprise of criticism" in this case, ie. the exercise of criticism.
