make concrete/take a definite form
Yes, you're right. In a social context the terms have similar meanings. In both cases, the idea is to go from something abstract and make it concrete, i.e. to go from a concept to something tangible.
To embody: to make concrete and perceptible or to personify. People who embodied the spirit of the nation: people who represented the spirit of the nation. You couldn't say: People who crystallized the spirit of the nation.
Crystallize: to cause to take a definite form. She tried to crystallize her thoughts. The idea of crystallize in this sense is to bring together so that they are clear.
