This is a TV show. Two friends get together. The one who has just come in notices his friend is watching a video of a tennis match he played a few years ago. He asks "I thought we were supposed to be watching basketball?" and after a few irrelevant comments his friend answers "Who would want to watch a Knicks game with play-off applications when we could watch you get eliminated in the opening round by a 14-year-old Norwegian boy?".
I've been an NBA fan for a lifetime and know perfectly well what the play-offs are, but "play-off applications" got me dumbfounded!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What the guy meant to say was "playoff implications" [see references]. Such an error is far from implausible.
This would mean a game in which at least one of the teams had a chance to qualify for post-season play, and thus the result could either increase or decrease their chances of appearing in the postseason playoffs.
