training room

English Social Sciences Sports / Fitness / Recreation
Hello everyone,

The Cultural centre will offer the best opportunities for sports-related activities with a ***training room*** and a gymnasium. There will be possibilities for various ball-games and exercises. In addition, there are facilities for musical and drama events like a permanent music/sound installation and a large stage screen. The lobby in this building is large and can quickly be furnished in case of smaller events like visitor-meetings or coffee-meetings arranged by the church.

What can "training room" imply in this context (description of a modern prison).

When I use Google search for images all I see is training rooms that look like classrooms in schools or conference halls. In other words, those training rooms shown by Google images have nothing to do with sport, but the context suggests that the training room is related to sport (offer the best opportunities for sports-related activities with a training room and a gymnasium).

If training in "training room" implies physical training, I can't understand what the difference is between 'training room' and 'gymnasium'.

Thank you.

fitness centre, 'gym'

In this context, it is clear 'training room' would mean 'physical fitness training room' — the sort of things with weight-training, rowing machines, etc. (commonly but somewhat inaccurately referred to as a 'gym')

A 'gymnasium', on the other hand, and in the stated context, refers rather to a large sports hall for playing team games like basketball, volleyball, etc.

weight-training room

To me a gymnasium implies an empty space ideal for ball sports or exercise classes, as your text says, whereas the training room would be a room with material, probably weights etc, for weight-training and such like.

If you do an Google image search for 'sports training room' you'll get some results showing that sort of thing, e.g.:

I can't find any pics specific to prisons (maybe for security reasons) but you get the idea.
