could it refer to the fact that it was done in bed?

Discussion

Fiona Grace Peterson Jan 21, 2019:
Portal x-ray I see now that there are instances of "portal chest x-ray", such as this:
https://www.researchgate.net/publication/320697715_A_case_re...
However if you look on the x-ray shown on the diagram, it says "portable". So I this point, either "portal" or "bedside" would fit.
"Figure 6:Last portal chest x-ray of the patient showed progressive bilateral metastasis"

This next link deals with postoperative emergencies, where the text suggests the patient is already in bed and in a fairly critical condition:
"Postoperative emergencies [...]
Reassure the patient and sit them up. Give high flow oxygen. Some patients with obstructive airways disease will not tolerate 100% oxygen, but do not let this deter you from giving sick patients oxygen.w1 Quickly familiarise yourself with the history and examine your patient’s heart and lungs. Check pulse oximetry and consider sampling arterial blood gas. Obtain an urgent portal chest x ray film."

Is "portatile" totally out of the question?

bedside chest x-ray

If they mean that the X-ray was done in the patient's bed, we would simply say "bedside chest x-ray". Writing "a portale" is rather odd though.

The bedside chest x-ray (CXR) is an indispensible diagnostic tool for monitoring seriously ill patients in the intensive care unit. The CXR often reveals abnormalities that may not be detected clinically.

The chest x-ray (CXR) remains one of the most commonly requested imaging studies, yet is one of the most complex and least understood, particularly the intensive care unit (ICU) bedside examination.

Note from asker:
It turns out that it is indeed a portable xray machine. https://dizionari.repubblica.it/Italiano/P/portale.html gives 2 TECN Struttura sporgente costituita da elementi portanti verticali o inclinati che sostengono una traversa orizzontale So the portale refers to the overhead supporting structure.

neutral philgoddard : I think we need Italian references - English ones don't prove that your answer is correct.

on screen

I'd say it means the x-rays we're viewed on screen during monitoring but I don't know how they would say this in the medical profession

neutral philgoddard : I think this is the most likely answer, though portal X-rays mostly seem to be used in a security context. But I agree with writeaway that you shouldn't post a 5 with no references.

gantry X-ray machine

I translated a patent about this type of X-ray imaging device for X-raying bedridden patients- would this fit in your context?

X-ray gantry
Abstract
An improved gantry for an examination apparatus, such as an x-ray apparatus comprising a source of x-rays and a detector of fluoresced photons, is disclosed. The apparatus is particularly suitable for use in a vehicle such that the examination can be carried out at locations convenient to the patients. The apparatus comprises a vertical standard and first and second carriages. The first carriage is movable along the vertical standard and carries a horizontal arm. The horizontal arm carries the second carriage, which moves along the horizontal arm in a direction orthogonal to the axis of the standard. A transverse arm carrying the x-ray apparatus is carried by the second carriage and moves with respect thereto in a third direction orthogonal to the first and second directions, so that three directions of motion along orthogonal axes are thus provided. Additionally, the second carriage is rotatable about the horizontal arm providing a first direction of rotation. The x-ray apparatus is mounted on a support plate which is pivotable with respect to the transverse arm, providing a second degree of rotation. Caging arms are provided which extend from the frame of the vehicle directly to the support plate and are readily fixed thereto, to confine the support table and the associated x-ray apparatus in transit. The caging arms and the standard are shock mounted to the vehicle such that any vibration occurring during travel is damped out.

I REMEMBER THAT THE SOURCE DID INDEED USE THE WORD "PORTALE" - AM SORRY I CAN'T FIND IT FOR YOU NOW
Note from asker:
Thanks Lydia. I woud really appreciate some references. Did the Italian source in your translation use the word "portale"?
Thank you so much. I think this answer is also right. So sorry I can't choose two answers.

Hi Joseph, thanks for the link. I am wondering whether it refers to the "portable" xray machine they must have used. After all here it says it is used for a portable crane! What do you think?

Cillie is correct.

Thanks for the link. Still not sure how this works for an xray done in bed. And this is about xrays not radiotherapy.
