protocol emulation/handling
Personally, I have never seen this term before, so this is just a suggestion. In the last part of the phrase, the required swappability of this new Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN) indicates that it is expected to handle communications with the other interconnected systems in exactly the same manner as the existing GGSN. In consequence, if the proposed GGSN is for testing/debug purposes I would suggest using the term protocol emulation (mimica interpreted as emulazione), whereas if it is intended to be an operational substitution, I would go for a more generic protocol handling.
