Although it wasn't widely used some twenty years ago, it is now becoming very common. Oxford defines it as "the head of some schools, univerties, and colleges".

Principal

Embora "dean" também possa ser reitor, aplica-se mais no sentido de deão ou decano de uma universidade. A palavra é mesmo "Principal". Pelo menos é a que se usa em Inglaterra, onde vivo.

Vice-Chancellor

The head of the whole institution. (The Chancellor is just a figurehead). Principal is the head of a school or higher education institution with lesser status than a university, and Deans and Directors are heads of faculties, not institutions, or you may have Dean of Studies, for example, as the Academic Head of the institution.
