Embora "dean" também possa ser reitor, aplica-se mais no sentido de deão ou decano de uma universidade. A palavra é mesmo "Principal". Pelo menos é a que se usa em Inglaterra, onde vivo.

The head of the whole institution. (The Chancellor is just a figurehead). Principal is the head of a school or higher education institution with lesser status than a university, and Deans and Directors are heads of faculties, not institutions, or you may have Dean of Studies, for example, as the Academic Head of the institution.
