@ André: contemporize Merriam-Webster defines 'contemporize' as "to make contemporary" - no further elaboration or other meanings. In your context, do you think this is the author's meaning? Or is it about putting these characteristics in the context of another (past) time? My first thought was the latter, but it would help to have your opinion about the time frame involved.
