Выше не поместилось, поэтому пишу тут. Отрывок из обсуждения носителей английского:
"Area studies" and "area studies specialist" are normal terms in academia
and the intelligence community in the USA. If somebody wrote "regional
studies", instead, it could sound as if the area of specialization were
regions within a country, as opposed to areas of the world.
В ней еще ряд ссылок на образовательные учреждения, в составе которых факультет AREA STUDIES.

: I'd go with "area studies" or "local area studies". "Regional studies" for an Arabist could include the whole of the Middle East!
