Russian to English Art/Literary Cinema, Film, TV, Drama Success of a film
Somebody says, "Я уверен, что фильм состоялся". The film has not yet premiered, but this person has seen it, or was involved in making it. I think I understand what it means, but would like to be sure.

Discussion

Rachel Douglas (asker) Aug 14, 2009:
It's clear! Thank you, gentlemen, for the lively discussion. Don't sweat it on my account. The way I understood this was confirmed (thanks to all), so I wrote what I had initially intended to write: it "came out well". That sounds natural as a remark by an insider, somebody who worked on the movie and knows how it came out, though it hasn't yet officially premiered.
Michael Korovkin Aug 14, 2009:
Very simple, Vic: "The film has worked out". That's all there is to it. Bad, good, ugly, a box–office success or a box–office disaster, packing a punch or a fart – it has worked out, happened, came to fruition. Was it a success – well, who knows...
Victor Zagria Aug 14, 2009:
дак ето just euphamism to avoid 'I/we' construction? Фильм просто появился на свет, стал явлением (пока в ряду подобных), и дабы избежать "я-канья" (like in "we made it, guys, yahoooo!!!") :))
Michael Korovkin Aug 14, 2009:
Victor Zagria Aug 14, 2009:
It depends on the instance, Gutbuster?
gutbuster Aug 14, 2009:
Victor Zagria Aug 13, 2009:
the film has gone through? has proved a success? is a sure success? We made it ...

Note from asker:
Right, thank you! That's what I thought. I'm editing a translation where it was written as "that the film will become well established" and I want to edit that to "that the film came out well" - but I got nervous and started having doubts.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks to all - so much help from so many people, on a small question! I'm selecting Alexander's comment as most helpful because it confirmed in several ways that I had gotten the sense correctly, so I could use the version I prefer - "came out well"."

this movie packs a punch

since it hasn't come out yet.

состояться как... means 'to reach a high professional level' rather than 'to become famous' (e. g. Therefore Фильм состоялся means 'this movie is well done', but not 'This movie is a huge success'.
Peer comment(s):

Whether it is a success or not (and it's not yet), it is well done.
