Russian term

выполнено 600 станций

Russian to English Science Environment & Ecology hydrology
за десять лет было выполнено 600 гидрологических станций

How can hydrologic stations be "carried out"? I think it means that a point was chosen and a ship went out and took information at that point...how is this best written in English?

Discussion

koundelev Jul 19, 2008:
station means a short-term stop of a research ship at a pre-selected poin in the ocean to carry out hydrological sampling...

completed

? I read it as the stations being completed/built.

Thank you, Scott.
neutral Olga Cartlidge : Could they have built 600 stations in 10 years ? ... This would be rather ambitious, to say the least : - ))

Honestly, I don't know. I'm no expert in the field, so I've no idea how long it takes :)
neutral koundelev : a wrong guess, look at http://www.marine.csiro.au/marq/edd_search.Browse_Citation?t...

Гидрологическая станция is not a short-term stop of a research ship as George said. Check this comprehensive defenition at: http://www.glossary.ru/cgi-bin/gl_sch2.cgi?RDokwurujo,lxqol!...

And compare with this (http://geology.com/articles/gaging-station.shtml):
Gaging stations are facilities used by hydrologists to automatically monitor streams, wells, lakes, canals, reservoirs and or other water bodies. Instruments at these stations collect information such as water height, discharge, water chemistry and water temperature.

Therefore, it may sound as:
The network consisting of 600 gaging stations has been established during 10 years.
Based on what your provided, the context doesn't give any references to any marine study or sampling in particular.
