Jack slep
: Omul would be correct if the context is to Lake Baikal where it is endemic. Otherwise, it is most likely the Arctic cisco

lake herring, freshwater herring
Another name for cisco, maybe one that some would relate to more easily. Genus Coregonus.

Jack slep
: I believe Lake Herring, aka cisco, is an entirely different species and found in the Great Lakes.

Thanks, jack. One Great Lakes freshwater "herring" is Coregonus artedii, omul is Coregonus migratorius. I realize they're different species, but thought that on a menu "freshwater herring" or "freshwater whitefish" might give more of an idea than "omul."
