Russian term

Kazakhstan or Kazakstan

Russian to English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters name of the country
I was always writing kazaKHstan and this is what the dictionary says. However, I have a Kazakhstan passport in front of me which says over and over KazaKstan.
Can you let me know if any of these is wrong?

Discussion

Aleksey Chervinskiy Apr 16, 2008:
козацькому роду нема переводу!
Serhiy Tkachuk Apr 16, 2008:
I just respect the way how they put it in their passports :)
Aleksey Chervinskiy Apr 16, 2008:
Может в Казахском языке нет звука "х", а может они хотят стать казаками.
Mikhail Kropotov Apr 16, 2008:
Thanks for a very interesting link, Serhiy! However, the e-mail is from 1995. It's 2008 now and the version with 'H' is still prevalent, isn't it?
Mikhail Kropotov Apr 16, 2008:
Just for the record (re James McVay's note), Ivan's answer was posted first.
Jack Doughty Apr 15, 2008:
It's a bit confusing for Russians though, isn't it? After all, a казак is not the same thing as a казах.
Serhiy Tkachuk Apr 15, 2008:
To sum up, it's up to the Kazakh to decide how to write the name of their country in Kazakh passports, isn’t it.
Serhiy Tkachuk Apr 15, 2008:
cf. http://yarchive.net/space/politics/kazakhstan_renaming.html
The government of Kazakhstan has requested Western nations using the Latin
alphabet to change their spelling of the country's name to "Kazakstan".
Serhiy Tkachuk Apr 15, 2008:
For Kazakhstan, see List of alternative country names
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_alternative_country_nam...
Fernsucht Apr 15, 2008:
turn the images on again, voila! the image with KazaKHstan replaces the now hidden text with KazaKstan =)))
Fernsucht Apr 15, 2008:
http://en.government.kz/ the funny part about it - look at the website BOTH with images enabled and disabled in your browser, and you'll see that when the images are off, the heading of the official website says KazaKstan, and when you
Serhiy Tkachuk Apr 15, 2008:
So, how to spell it depends on the particular situation or text!
BTW, while all Ukrainian official acts use the word Kyiv, I have to write Kiev in my letter to another country if they aren’t aware of the change…
Serhiy Tkachuk Apr 15, 2008:
So, Kazakstan is quite OK! all the more, we have to respect what is written in a passport
Serhiy Tkachuk Apr 15, 2008:
I think the matter is in transcribing the word on the basis of what is actually pronounced by the Kazakh.
A similar case is Kyiv (as transcribed from the Ukrainian language), whereas Kiev from Russian
Vitaly Kisin Apr 15, 2008:
Have a look here: http://kazakhstan.orexca.com/
Fernsucht Apr 15, 2008:
Hehe, here's the passport) but it's Kazakstan) I think the Kazakh gov't likes the second spelling variant more) http://www.worldpassports.org/asia/pages/Kazakhstan.htm
Fernsucht Apr 15, 2008:
Both spellings possible, although Kazakhstan is the preffered one

both are correct

Kazakhstan is used more often. If you want to be on the safe side then use Kazakhstan.

Please bear in mind that former Soviet republics do not always use English for their passports. The former Soviet Union used French to transliterate names. For example, my name Поташник was spelled as Potachnik in my Soviet passport. I had to officially change my name from Potachnik to Potashnik after I left Russia and moved to Australia where French spelling made no sense.

neutral Nicholas Krivenko : Would you mind citing an official source? Just curious where you saw the official Kazakhstan calling itself "Kazakstan"? Thanks.

agree Tigran Mikaelian : There are many examples of such linguistic atavism that have sprung up in the confusion of the transition from the Russian-dominated era to the modern-day latinization of the former Soviet Republics.
7 hrs
neutral Tsogt Gombosuren : "Kazakhstan" for "Казахстан" and "cossacks" for "козаки"
10 hrs
neutral Nico Rhodionoff : в комментарии уважаемого Tsogt Gombosuren все было бы хорошо, только казаки пишутся через А, а не О. Темна вода в облацеях!
