Russian term

перепускается на горизонт

Russian to English Other Geology mining/ore
Добытая в карьере апатитовая руда через систему рудоспусков перепускается на горизонт капитальной штольни, прорезающий гору и подсекающий карьер на отметке 430 м, ... и направляется на обогатительные фабрики производственного объединения.

Пока, у меня есть: "The apatite ore mined in the carrier by means of a system of ore chutes crosses over the horizon of the main tunnel, cutting into the mine and striking the carrier at an elevation of 430 meters and, ... is sent to a production association coal-preparation plant."

My question is this: there is such a thing as horizon mining, which is a method of creating horizontal mines (mines on the horizon) better explained in the link below.

The phrasing "перепускается на горизонт" challenges me because I'm not clear if this is laymen's usage ie "on the horizon" or if it refers to something more technical. I've taken my best shot "crosses over the horizon" ("crosses over the main tunnel on the horizon"?) or perhaps "bypasses the horizon of the main tunnel" would be better? I welcome suggestions / comments.

Thanks Jack. As a rule I dont translate outside my areas of specialty (and this is definitely outside them) so the terms are new to me. I appreciate the help!!
Jack slep Jan 17, 2012:
Catherine, several points. In Russian mining, горизонт is almost always "level" and карьер is an open pit (open cast, open cut, surface, strip) mine or quarry not a "carrier," which I'm sure was an unintentional boo-boo. Since you seem to be dealing with underground mining, it seems odd to use the term карьер at all. And Larissa is right, the ore goes to a processing, dressing, or concentrating plant.
Catherine Pawlick (asker) Jan 17, 2012:
Ah, right you are, I didn't see "coal," but now I see I had it at the end there. I wonder why they dont use "at the height" of 430 m, but I'll go with "mark" or "level." Phew. Thanks ))
Larissa Boutrimova Jan 17, 2012:
Catherine, a couple of other things - since the text is about apatite ore, it should be something like "ore processing plants" (not coal) for "обогатительные фабрики"; "на отметке 430 м" - you could say "at 430 m level" or "at 430 m mark".
Catherine Pawlick (asker) Jan 17, 2012:
*adit level, not audit.

Hi Larissa, and Anna ~
Thank you both for your posts. Based on those suggestions then, we would have: "The apatite ore mined in the open pit ...is transferred through a series of ore passes to the main audit level, cutting into the mountain and striking the *open pit* at (should it be "from") an elevation of 430 meters and...is sent to a production association coal-preparation plant."
Larissa Boutrimova Jan 17, 2012:
I would suggest using "open pit" for "карьер" and "cutting into the mountain" for "прорезающий гору".

В вышеприведенной ссылке см. рис. 7 "Cхемы вскрытия шахтных полей штольнями". Там довольно неплохо показано и разъяснено, что такое штольня и горизонт.
