Discussion

Oleg Lozinskiy Jun 12, 2013:
In Russian, "стук"... ... has ALSO a different connotation. (Just to remind).
Olga Kuchuk Jun 12, 2013:
The whole phrase is usually used almost exclusively in the mechanics/automotive industry. Когда что-то стучит, it is making some kind of a noise, and if you do not take care of it, at one point it will "read its ugly head" and instead of being just a noise will become a large problem for you. I wouldn't know if there is an automotive slang in English as an equivalent, but that's roughly what it means.
Mark Berelekhis Jun 12, 2013:
'стук' implies that something is broken and will eventually be exposed -- is that the meaning?

I suggest moving away from auto-related proverbs, as I can't think of an equivalent in English, and make it general.

agree Alexander Teplitsky : It is required to to translate as though some layman said, therefore literal translation seems like the most appropriate

Something will sooner or later come to the surface.

The noise part may have to be modified with this option.
