натягивать:
A flat cutting instrument, when a small portion of metal has gone from the cutting edge (a notch has appeared), can be repaired by heating it and hammering on its flat side in such a way, that the metal would stretch in the direction of the notch and replace the metal that has gone.

наточить:
to sharpen.

Of course, it's a very low-tech. But at that time new instruments were very hard to get, and such methods of repair were practiced.
