Discussion

Gene Selkov Jul 10, 2010:
to sensors just as well I have dead pixels in one of my cameras that are stuck in a variety of states. I can imagine a well amplifier "melting" if it is hit by a proton, for example. It will start leaking, which will render it insensitive to light, but it may still be readable. Another scenario is when the multiplexor gate is hit and goes incommunicado.

This confusing array of words tries to resolve the confusion created by two possible uses of "dead": (1) there is no connection to it. (2) there is a signal coming, but it does not respond to light. I don't feel I will sound like a fool if I simply say "dead" in all cases. They are dead for all practical purposes and are handled in the same way regardless of the cause -- by dark frame subtraction.

Stuck pixels apply more to LCDs because pixel state should be changeable; stuck means that a pixel's state can't be changed.

Pixels on a camera's matrix perform a different function: they don't display a picture, they record light so stuck is less applicable.
Gene Selkov Jul 10, 2010:
I'm irked by "mistakes" Dead pixels are a sensor defect. The only situation I can imagine that might be classified as a mistake is when the user forgets to take store a dark frame and subtract the dead pixels.

Let's sort out "dead" vs. "stuck". I am going to equalise my endorsements because we don't know the exact meaning of "битые". Essentially, there are three words in use:

stuck = stuck in whatever state there is.
dead = stuck at 0;
hot = stuck at some non-zero value;
dead = all of the above.
defective = all of the above.

I hear "dead" in the all-encompassing sense more often than any other word.

agree Gene Selkov : make it "stuck", rather than "sticking"
