This place is described in the book as follows:

"В нашем Городском Саду продают много сувениров....Я вошла в Городской Сад. Если быть честной, то такое помпезное название вовсе не подходит небольшому кусочку земли, прорезанному коротенькими аллейками и заставленному десятками лотков со всякими сувенирами. Посреди сада был небольшой фонтан с мраморной чашей в центре, а за ним высилась круглая беседка с ажурной решеткой"

Although set in modern times, the book is of a fantasy genre, aimed at teenagers.

I have thought of a few possibilities, none of which I am happy with. Before I enquire with the author (yes, I actually get to speak direct to the author on this one!), I wondered whether any of the ProZ-ers could help?!

I'm following both your (Steffen and Svetlana T) comments with interest. I agree that the idea of Gorodskoy Sad has a provincial air about it, and for the feel of the book, I think that is what the author intended. Nevertheless, I am translating for English teenagers, and I need to find the best phrase accordingly.

IMO, it doesn't matter for the translation whether the town/city is "provincial, small or medium". "Town park" is just bad EEnglish. Nobody says so.

The author is actually Ukranian, if that makes any difference. She has already specified that the setting is 'a city by the sea', so I would assume a provincial small/medium town.

City Garden Thanks Svetlana - but I'm just concerned that in English, 'City Garden' doesn't imply a place where there might be a market, it just calls to mind a park. Admittedly, I am unsure whether in Russian it also has that sense, but want to make sure.

agree Steffen Pollex (X) : I'd prefer this one, too. Actually, what they mean in Russian by "сад" here is "park". It's just a more poetic expression. Would you call the "Летний Сад" and "Зимний Сад" in St. Petersburg as such a "garden" in English? These are parks, aren't they?

I turned away from 'garden', because for me this implies too much grass and flowers for how I imagine this place to be, based on the description provided (mainly due to the presence of market stalls). Although municipal is an alternative, because the narrator says it is a 'pompous name' that doesn't suit the area, and because indeed 'municipal' does call to mind a slightly run-down area, lacking funding, this wouldn't fit. Town Park

Я не уверена, но, как мне кажется, в больших городах (city) такого понятия, как "городской сад" нет. Если вспомнить русскую литературу, то речь обычно шла о провинции....

А вот французский натолкнул на мыслЮ - municipal, поскольку именно это и имеется в виду: принадлежащий муниципалитетеу - то есть денег всегда не хватает и несколько дорожек в саду очень грязные:))

neutral Steffen Pollex (X) : It doesn't sound good in English. And it's, IMO, a matter of taste whether to call the town "town" or "city". But "city park" sounds much more pleasant than "town park". And in Leningard you have two "сада" minimum.

maybe, but in Leningrag you can not find Городской Сад, only Парк (Победы, Авиаторов и т.д.). Городской сад - it's very-very for noplaceville, only IMHO
