@Asker What country is the text from?
Christine Walsh Sep 3, 2013:
Me pregunto si no podrá ser 'artesiano' en vez de 'artesanal'. Me llama la atención la similitud de los términos, y realmente no entiendo bien lo de 'canal artesanal'. ¿Hecho a pico y pala? Suerte.

If no one else can offer their help I would either leave it as a proper name, 'Artesanl Canal' or translate literally.

In addition, modules have been established to improve water distribution efficiency by installing plots with automated irrigation systems, lining dirt ditches and building small water reservoirs.

manmade channel/ditch

I think Christine is on to something with her "Hecho a pico y pala". Perhaps the manmade as opposed to natural channels should be emphasised?
