Source text - English When my wife told me she was pregnant, I got that stomach-churning sensation that hits you on a plunging roller coaster. I was excited, yes, but... oh my God. Parenting was for, well, parents.
So here I stand, bug-eyed and sweating buckets like some poorly-drawn cartoon character, the question marks floating in the air around my head while I try to prepare myself for the complete care and responsibility of another living being besides my cat. I'm responsible for making sure this little human doesn't grow up and turn into a complete monster. If the child turns out a social moron-- my fault. If the babe can't find Luxembourg on the map, blame me for not providing a better education. They'll need therapy, and of course that will be on my head too. So many opportunities for wrong turns!
I remember the day my father sat me down and awkwardly told me about the birds and the bees; it was perhaps the most excruciating and embarrassing half hour of both our lives. I can't do that to another human being.
Maybe I'm getting a little ahead of myself here. I can do this, I say; I'll be a great father. My child will be reared a well-rounded, educated, upstanding citizen of the world, and he or she won't hate me.
And then I imagine the baby, still safe within the confines of my wife's belly, suddenly opening an alarmed eye as the thought enters his or her mind: "What if my dad just can't hack it?
Translation - Dutch Toen mijn vrouw me vertelde dat ze zwanger was, voelde ik mijn maag draaien zoals tijdens een duik op een achtbaan. Ik was opgewonden, dat wel, maar… O jee. Het ouderschap was voor… nou, ...voor ouders.
Tja, hier sta ik dan, met uitpuilende ogen en badend in het zweet. Ik lijk wel een slecht getekende stripfiguur met een hoop vraagtekens die rond m’n hoofd tollen terwijl ik me probeer voor te bereiden op de zorg en verantwoordelijkheid voor een ander levend wezen naast mijn kat. Ik ben verantwoordelijk om ervoor te zorgen dat dit kleine mensje niet opgroeit tot een monster. Als het kind een sociaal mispunt wordt, dan is dat mijn schuld. Als het ukkie Luxemburg niet op de kaart kan vinden, kun je mij verwijten dat ik geen betere opvoeding heb voorzien. Ze zullen in therapie moeten en natuurlijk is ook dat weer voor mijn rekening. Zoveel dingen die fout kunnen gaan!
Ik herinner me nog goed de dag dat mijn vader me vroeg om bij hem te komen zitten en onwennig vertelde over de bloemetjes en de bijtjes. Het was voor ons allebei misschien wel het meest pijnlijke en beschamende half uur uit ons hele leven. Dat kan ik een andere mens toch niet aandoen!
Misschien loop ik wat te ver op de zaken vooruit. Ik kan dit aan, zeg ik tegen mezelf. Ik word een geweldige vader. Mijn kind zal opgroeien als een veelzijdige, beschaafde en oprechte wereldburger en hij of zij zal mij niet haten.
En dan stel ik me de baby voor, nog veilig genesteld in de buik van mijn vrouw, die plots een oogje opent wanneer de verontrustende gedachte bij hem of haar opkomt: “Wat als mijn pa er niets van bakt?”

Languages in general are my greatest hobby. In my spare time, I often expand my knowledge of the languages I speak and I keep in touch with a lot of international friends in order to keep my grasp of the spoken language updated. I find translating very useful in learning more about languages, as every translation is a different linguistically enriching experience. I also keep up with the latest technological developments and have a great interest in them. I am, in general, a very resolute person. Once an objective has been set, I use all possible resources in order to achieve it. Thanks to this resolve, I have never missed a deadline.
