Enjoy the ride, my friend!
Translation - English CONSCIOUS TRAVELLING – THE ANIMALS
It has been several months since I have started my Conscious Travelling-series, and I have arrived to the last chapter: the animals. I don’t intend to set a hiearchy, I wouldn’t say that animals are more important than environmentalism, let alone inhabitants, but I think, eventually this article will be the most disheartening of all.
“Look, an elephant!” - I yelled out of excitement when I first saw this giant wonder of a creature. He was standing on a reef with his comrade. Comrade. Yes. The majestic animal had chains on all of his ankles, and next to him there was a short, Indian man, holding a stick for disclipline in one hand, waving at us with the other. He was inviting us to ride the elephant for some rupees. There was a garish saddle on his back, and he was just staring off into the distance. “Shall we go for a ride?” - I asked my Israeli fellow traveller. He patiently explained like a good dad what was really happening. “We must not. These animals are captured at young age, gets starved and beaten daily to be trained, and held in captivity for all of their lives within horrible conditions.”
Luckily he could immediately take all my willingness away from the idea. The truth is, until this day, I still write these lines in shame. How stupid I was thinking the animals in India are for my entertainment, and since I have money, I am entitled to sit on any wild animal’s back, just because I can. Now I know that there is no wealth on the world which could give any right to anyone for exploiting another living being.
Most of these animals had been captured from the wild, taken away from their families, and for making them let you sit on their back, their owners have to break their souls at first. For this, their entire life will be an infinite series of beating, handcuffs, chains and terrorizing. Enjoy the ride, my friend!
