Bearing false witness, causing a man to be sentenced to death and executed
This is from a work entitled "Justice of the Peace and Parish Officer", by Thomas Chitty, publilshed in London in 1831. So "taking away of a man's life" is to be taken literally, meaning causing a man to be executed, almost certainly by hanging.
