English term

Short Course

English to French Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering Tuiles et bardeaux
Short Course
In some instances a short course will be
necessary. A short course is needed when a
section of the fascia steps out and is not an
even panel width difference from the main
fascia. Start battening at the fascia with the
longest width (or if installing without
battens start laying panels) and work up
to the course above or down to the course
below the stepped fascia.

Discussion

B D Finch Oct 10, 2019:
@FX Fraipont There's not more room in the comment on your answer, so I shall reply to your last point here. Looking at the photos again, you could be right. The photos seem to show two or three different buildings and each does show a shallow course of tiles, while only one shows a dormer. The bottom course of tiles is very much shallower than the others. In EN-GB, we'd use the adjective "shallow", not "short" for that (though deeper than 1 inch). We also wouldn't use the word "fascia" for a section of roof pitch, though we might use "fascia" for the side of a dormer.

This apparent EN-GB : EN-US difference adds to the complexity involved in the usage of such adjectives in English. E.g. the depth of a drawer is the distance from front to back, while the depth of a box is the distance from top to bottom.

Peer comment(s):

Rangée me semble plus naturel ici.

That only shows that term is used in one official document, from which I conclude that both "rang" (used by Dicobat) and "rangée" are current and correct. So, it looks like we are both right: or, given the exchange between me and FX Fraipont, both wrong.

See pic : https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48873588363_d69daffabb_b...

on the picture, the "short course" is obviously the first row of tile panel from the bottom, which is a few centimeters high only.
Peer comment(s):

disagree B D Finch : That would be a shallow course. A short course would be a course of short length.// Not when the noun is "course". In your illustration, the short courses are the courses either side of the dormer. They are the same height as the other courses,
5 hrs
nope, you're wrong here, the illustration is very clear. "Short" can be on the height of the panel.//A picture is worth a thousand "courses"...// First row from bottom is 1 inch high.
