I'm reasonably sure that "tracer" is an anglicism (lower-case A!), like "checker", but that has no bearing on the translation, really.
A bit like suivre/le suivi = monitor

Yes, I think something more than "record" or "indicate" is required, those words without "the details of the protocol" are ambiguous, they might just mean noting that the protocol was followed, whereas track means recording details. Thanks ph-b!
