acquisition

"Masse" means "the assets of" or "the items included in". See definition 8 here, which mentions Konkursmasse and Erbmasse.

disagree Daniel Arnold (X) : no, "masse" has the same meaning here as in bankruptcy proceedings, which is "assets"

agree Steffen Walter : While Daniel is obviously right, I think that a disagree is uncalled for in this context because your paraphrasing does work just as well.

Thank you for the feedback! Greatly appreciated...
disagree Steffen Walter : Can't be a "target" anymore because the transaction/deal has already been completed according to the context ("Der Kauf wurde zum Jahresanfang 2022 wirksam."). This is apparently a text scheduled for publication in the new year (perhaps an annual report).

buy-out target

The buy-out target includes......

UK companies have 'assets' but US corporations also have 'estates', esp. in bankruptcy.

I've worked in A&M - with Champagne-Socialist Solicitors in the City of London - when the flat-rate fee for a corporate take-over had been GBP 3,000, but can't recall the target being described as a 'pool of assets'.

You may be interpreting too narrowly 'target' that can be past, present or future : CanE 'Although the circulars sent ..were so integral to conducting the target corp's business' & USA: 'Do takeover targets underperform' https://www.jstor.org/stable/4126741
Example sentence:

Acquisition Target means any Person (or *substantially all of the assets and business operations* of any Person) which is to be acquired in a Permitted Acquisition by one or more Borrowers or by a Subsidiary of a Borrower .
