Initially, I thought "En Legal" might mean that the person was current on payments. But researching this term in context for the Dominican Republic, it seems it could refer to a debt status other than "Past Due," one suggests it might be "uncollectable." Here are some examples I found online (not my text) if anyone has time to read and offer a suggestion. Thanks in advance for your time:

: Debt recovery lawyers often collect debts on letters and negotiation before action, so "litigated" is inaccurate

You could even just say 'in legal':
Now my phone has been disconnected because my account is "in legal", although I am not in arrears on my account.

I think 'legal' would be better than 'court' here. Legal action usually begins with a lawyer sending a threatening letter, and then the account will either go to court or be written off.

: More legal inaccuracy & ambiguous - it's not subject to, but referred to a legal or litigation dept. // Unlike you, despite the UK ITI Bulletin's request for an article on legal translation, I STILL am a lawyer as an Inner Templar for life & a litigator.

As you never tire of telling us, you used to be a lawyer. But that was back in the 19th century, so you've probably forgotten that litigation means legal action.

: Have to agree with AMM; I used to work in a legal debt recovery department - the fact that debts were referred to us didn't mean that all of them were pursued through the courts - but they were nonetheless "in legal" so far as our clients were concerned

I'm sorry you've been sucked in by Adrian's hairsplitting, and I don't see why you've disagreed with me and then posted the same answer yourself.

in legal
Note that debt recovery need not necessarily be through the courts/legal action. Many debtors pay up when they receive a lawyer's letter. Many dedicated debt recovery lawyers use phone calling, some use private debt collectors.

I used to work for the debt recovery department of an English law firm. Our clients were credit controllers in various industries and "in legal" was the trade term most of them used by most of them to denote when overdue debts were sent to us.

Yes, but you put court/legal action, which is only the final stage of debt collection by lawyers, and "in legal" doesn't necessarily imply legal proceedings - also note I cannot agree with AMM's suggestion of "litigated", for the same reason//Yes
